Stone Consolidating Materials--Deterioration of Stone

2. DETERIORATION OF BUILDING STONE. The processes leading to the deterioration of building stone have been the subject of numerous publications [11, 14-16, 21-23]. Therefore, stone deterioration is only briefly reviewed herein for the purpose of providing a basis for understanding the performances of stone consolidants.

ChemTeam: Physical and Chemical Changes

A process in which chemical bonds are broken and new ones are made. A process like grinding some salt crystals into a fine powder does not involve the breaking of chemical bonds and the formation of new ones, so it is a physical change. A chemical change always involves a change in the chemical relationship between the various substances involved.

Mechanisms of Stone Formation - PubMed Central (PMC)

The mechanism of stone formation include nucleation of stone constituent crystals, their growth or aggregation to a size that can interact with some intrarenal structure, their retention within the kidney or renal collecting system and further aggregation and/or secondary nucleation to form the clinical stone. This sequence is depicted in Figure 1.

Mechanical stone washing is similar to the chemical washing process of the acid wash. Here also stones are tumbled with freshly dyed denim, but it does not require any chemicals. The final look of the product depends on the size, shape and hardness of the stones used.

Gemstone Treatments - Coating and Chemical Treatments

The Thai dealers are particularly adept at the process. It involves heating the gemstone up to almost melting point. So in gems like Ruby and Sapphire (Corundum) this is upwards of 1500 degrees centigrade. Once the material hits these high temperatures, the molecular structure of the material "loosens" allowing the chemical to enter the stone.
